Looks like a former Lex Luthor could be taking a trip to the Marvel universe. Actor Michael Rosenbaum, who played Clark Kent/Superman's nemesis for over 150 episodes of the CW series "Smallville," is the latest addition to the shortlist for the leading role of Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, in Marvel's upcoming space epic Guardians of the Galaxy. Rosenbaum revealed the news to fans via his Twitter account that he has already auditioned for the role in director James Gunn's superhero movie, adding his name to a growing list of contenders for what is turning out to be one of the hottest roles in Hollywood right now. More below!

Here is Rosenbaum's announcement revealing his audition, via his Twitter account (via The Playlist):
Earlier, word on the street was Lee Pace, Joel Edgerton, Jack Huston, Eddie Redmayne, Garrett Hedlund, Sullivan Stapleton, and James Marsden were all up for the part, but right before the Christmas holiday, Variety reported that the list was actually down to Jim Sturgess (Cloud Atlas) and "Chuck" star Zachary Levi, with an unnamed third actor to test after the holidays. Rumor spread like wildfire yesterday that the third actor was actually Joseph Gordon-Levitt, but since that wasn't confirmed (and still hasn't been, technically), we figured we'd rather wait until something more concrete came up before we wrote about it.

While no casting decisions have been announced by Marvel as of yet, at least we know that Rosenbaum physically auditioned for the movie. It's funny that he auditioned but wasn't a part of the previous reported shortlist, because that goes to show how little everyone actually knows of what goes on behind the scenes. But instead of breathlessly racing to "report" the latest rumors, it's really not that difficult to wait until we get some sort of concrete notice like Rosenbaum gave before we start speculating about the future of the Marvel universe.

Those of us who aren't completely familiar with the Guardians of the Galaxy, we can refer to Ethan's handy primer on the subject, and after taking a look there, it honestly sounds any of the actors listed above could handle playing a role like Peter Quill. Rosenbaum could definitely bring some comedic elements to the part (check out Poolhall Junkies for a goofier performance from the "Smallville" star), and seems like just a good a choice as any. With a premise as wild as this film's, it's going to take a lot more than a lead actor to make or break this movie, so we'll keep our eyes and ears open for more concrete updates until Marvel hits us with an official casting announcement. Thoughts?
