Last week, Cloverfield and Let Me In director Matt Reeves was atop the shortlist to replace recently departed director Rupert Wyatt on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the sequel to the surprise hit Rise of the Planet of the Apes. While Guillermo del Toro and Rian Johnson were also on the list, they seemed like long shots. Other names included In addition, The Disappearance of Alice Creed director J. Blakeson,28 Weeks Later director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, Take Shelter director Jeff Nichols and The Impossibledirector Juan Antonio Bayona. Now Deadline confirms that Reeves has signed to direct the sequel. Read on!

Reeves was our favorite pick on the shortlist, and if anyone can deliver a quality film and still meet theMay 23rd, 2014 release date, it's him. Reeves has proven a great ability to deliver thrilling sci-fi withCloverfield, and Let Me In was a genre mashing successful adaptation that deserves a lot of credit, even if the original Swedish adaptation was phenomenal on its own. The script by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver is ready to go into production, and Reeves is just waiting to get started now. Here's hoping Fox isn't rushing production and letting Wyatt leave wasn't a big mistake. Stay tuned.
