Man, Mark Wahlberg really digs foreign language remakes. And why wouldn't he? He earned an Oscar nomination for his foul-mouthed and hilarious work in The Departed and starred in another remake earlier this year with Contraband, which, despite being a barely passable action film, made a decent amount of money at the box office. Now, Variety pegs the Italian Job star for the lead role in a remake of Point Blank, Fred Cavaye's 2010 French action thriller, not to be confused with the Lee Marvin movie of the same name. Wahlberg plays a male nurse who is forced to help a murderer escape when his wife is kidnapped.
There isn't a director attached to this one yet, but adaptations of French thrillers seem to be all the rage these days. How cool would it be if Wahlberg was able to convince fellow Boston native Ben Affleck to ditch his own French action remake in development, Tell No One, and switch over to direct Point Blank? Hey, a guy can dream. There are a few great chase sequences in the original, and though it's a fairly simple story, a remake like this is also a great opportunity for a director to establish some style points. Wahlberg's frequent collaborator Stephen Levinson is producing along with Working Title films, and Point Blank is also getting a separate Korean remake, too.
