After being rather adorable in 21 Jump Street, the lovely Brie Larson is heading in a musical direction. The "United States of Tara" actress already belted out a tune on the big screen as Envy Adams in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, but now she's going in a much different direction as the star of a Bollywood musical called Basmati Blues. Showbiz 411 has the story which says the film is coming from newcomer Jeffrey Soros, head of the board of directors for Los Angeles’s Museum of Contemporary Art and the nephew of billionaire philanthropist and Democratic fundraiser George Soros.
This will be the first non-documentary film for Jeffrey Soros, who has plenty of funds to produce movies, and it also marks the big screen writing and directing debut of Dan Baron.The film follows an American girl in India (where the film will be shot on location), but it's not clear what the story will be. However, there's supposedly plenty of original music, including new tunes by the chart-topping group Sugarland. That doesn't really tickle our fancy, but whatever.
Apparently Larson beat out some actresses who have been in the business a lot longer like Kate Hudson. Showbiz also says Larson is in the midst of getting a big career boost like Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain over the past couple years. After all, she'll appear in The Spectacular Now and Don Jon's Addiction at Sundance later this month, and she'll also be seen in Relanxious with Jason Sudeikis and Olivia Wilde. For a Bollywood musical from a mostly untested producer (he has one documentary to his producing career) and freshman writer and director it seems unusual for a film to garner a lot of attention from leading ladies that Larson had to beat out. Maybe the script is that good? Or the budget just has no limits because of the billions Soros has access to for funding. It sounds like a risky move for Larson, but she has a bit of a singing career, so maybe it'll help boost her appeal. Thoughts?
