2014 just got a lot more prehistoric. Out of nowhere this Friday evening, Universal has confirmed a release date, and nothing else, for the long-rumored, long-delayed sequel Jurassic Park IV. We've been hearing about this one for nearly as long this site has been in existence, and most recently we expected that it was completely dead. But now official Jurassic Park pages on Facebook and Twitter are confirming the news, stating: "Just announced! Jurassic Park 4 is coming to theaters on June 13, 2014!" It looks like it's real and happening - but Steven Spielberg will only be producing it, not directing. At least according to reports.
One source seems to be THR's Borys Kit, who tweeted the initial news when it broke: "This just in: Universal Pictures will release Jurassic Park 4 in 3D on June 13, 2014." He followed that with this tidbit: "Spielberg is only producing JP4. No director on it at this time." So they have a release date, most likely a script and an idea, but no director or cast yet. We do know that there is a Jurassic Park 3D re-release, of the original movie, coming April this year. In addition to that, there was buzz that Rise of the Planet of the Apes writers Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver had been hired as of last June for a new script, but no word if this is still their take or not. We'll have to wait to see. For now, mark down June 2014 down as the return of Jurassic Park.
Update: Deadline mentions they're shooting in native 3D, and that Steven Spielberg will definitely be producing. "Spielberg is returning to produce the next installment of the franchise, the last of which came out in July 2001." It's also interesting to note that a June 2014 release puts this a few weeks from Pixar's dinosaur movie The Good Dinosaur, hitting theaters May 30th. We'll keep you updated on any JP4 news.
