A lot of Marvel movie news of late has involved Thor: The Dark World, voice casting for Guardians of the Galaxy, and even the studio's Phase 3 plans. But there's still a Phase 2 film that's shrouded in mystery, and that's Anthony and Joe Russo's sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The search for the female lead has been underway for quite some time, with Mary Elizabeth Winstead rumored at one point and actresses like Alison Brie, Teresa Palmer & Emelia Clarke in contention, but now THR reports Marvel has selected "Revenge" star Emily VanCamp to join Chris Evans in Cap's upcoming adventure. Read on.
While Marvel still won't officially confirm who she'll play, VanCamp is being pegged for the part of Sharon Carter, another agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. who is the niece of Peggy Carter, Cap's love interest in the first movie. I've only seen a handful of episodes of "Revenge," but from what I know of her it appears VanCamp is spirited enough to hold her own, much in the same way Hayley Atwell did the first time around. Felicity Jones was also up for this role, and while I would have liked to see the Like Crazy actress get some more attention here, she actually just landed a role in another Marvel property - The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
We already know that that Cobie Smulders and Scarlett Johansson are reprising their roles as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents Maria Hill and Black Widow (respectively) in this sequel, so here's hoping VanCamp can become yet another strong female presence in the Marvel movie universe. Captain America: The Winter Soldier doesn't have a start date set in stone yet, but the movie will be a part of Marvel's Phase 2 series and is already set to arrive in theaters on April 4th, 2014. We'll continue to keep you updated on Marvel movies. Thoughts?
