Sylvester Stallone has had a pretty impressive comeback in recent years. The Rocky and Rambo star was once one of the biggest actors in the world, but despite his box office successes through the 80s and 90s, he was relegated to straight-to-DVD work like Eye See You, Shade, and Avenging Angelo for much of the 2000s. After resurrecting his iconic characters and getting the gang back together for The Expendables, Stallone seems to have a second chance at being a megastar again, but that doesn't mean he'll only be doing blockbusters. Variety reports that Sly has joined Reach Me, an indie drama for director John Herzfeld.
The film tells the story of a collection of people who have a connection with a self-help book written by a secretive and reclusive former football coach and stars rapper-turned-actor Nelly, Elizabeth Henstridge (who has just been cast in Joss Whedon's "S.H.I.E.L.D." TV show for ABC), Danny Aiello, Omari Hardwick, and Rebekah Chaney. Stallone just finished filming a few days on the movie, but Variety isn't sure which role he played. The reclusive coach, perhaps? We'll have to wait and see.
Herzfeld, who actually starred alongside Stallone in the 1986 action film Cobra, has directed films like 2 Days in the Valley and 15 Minutes, and he wrote and is directing Reach Me. It'll be interesting to see Stallone break out his dramatic chops again outside of the action genre, since the last time he did that with any real success was 1997's Cop Land, which wasn't particularly well received upon release but has earned its supporters in the ensuing years.
