Though it was assumed a third film in the Tron franchise would arrive after the moderate success of Tron: Legacy, a sequel that arrived 28 years after the first innovative sci-fi film, development has been stagnant. But now word is coming from Heat Vision that Disney has a "renewed urgency" to get what is currently only called Tron 3 off the ground thanks to new studio head Alan Horn. Though reviews have been mixed on Tron: Legacy, the film grossed over $400 million worldwide so that's enough for Disney to get the franchise back on track. And to get the sequel moving, writer Jesse Tigutow has been hired to write a new draft.
Wigutow has been around for a little while (he wrote the adaptation of Eragon), but more recently he's been pretty busy with an adaptation of Peter and the Starcatchers also at Disney (with Gary Ross directing) and he also worked on the gestating remake of The Crow. David DiGilio wrote the first draft of the script and Joseph Kosinski is still attached to direct. Though it's been a couple years since Tron: Legacy hit theaters, fans have had their thirst quenched with the Disney XD series "Tron: Uprising," which has been a pretty cool bridge between Tron and Tron: Legacy. It'll be interesting to see if anything from the series makes it into the films and what kind of new elements we'll get to continue the story. Stay tuned for more. Excited?
Also Worth Watch
Legacy was no worse than Tron. Interesting premise, great visuals, but weak story. Still, I'll watch another one.
