It's always a good day when someone gets a good quote out of Marvel's Kevin Feige. We're still a solid 60 days from Iron Man 3 kicking off Phase 2 leading up to Avengers 2, but in the mix are new Cap and Thor movies, and a Guardians of the Galaxy adaptation being directed by James Gunn. Guardians is one I'm most intrigued about, half because it has characters like a talking raccoon, giant tree and green-skinned alien badass, half because it's going to be set "95% in space", meaning it could be the true sci-fi comic book movie that Green Lantern should've been. That "95%" quote comes straight from Feige in a new interview he gave to SFX, where they've previewed this key quote online because it's worth mentioning and discussing.
To get right into Feige's latest quotes about the next series of Marvel movies, SFX (via ComicBookMovie) asked him whether it's a "fair description" that Marvel's Phase 2 is being described as "comic". He responds:
"I wouldn't say that in a broad sense. The Thor film and the Guardians Of The Galaxy film certainly are cosmic. Guardians and Thor will take the brunt of the cosmic side of the universe, particularly Guardians, which is 95% in space. I think Iron Man 3 shows the other side of Phase 2, which is delving deeper into the characters. Throwing them on a much more personal journey. And Captain America will showcase... What's exciting to me about Cap – sort of about Iron Man 3 too if you look at it – is it's tonally almost like a different genre. Shane Black's described Iron Man 3 as a Tom Clancy sort of political thriller, which I like a lot. We hired our directors on Cap because they loved our explanation that we really want to make a '70s political thriller masquerading as a big superhero movie. Just like with the first film – we got Joe Johnston because we said, 'We want to do a '40s World War Two movie masquerading as a big superhero movie.' I love that we're doing a sequel to a film that's a completely different genre than the first film. I think that's fun. And the comics do it all the time." |
I'm glad he explains a lot of the concepts for these movies, but there's still a lot of vague details regarding what exactly we're going to see with Phase 2, kicking off this summer (with Shane Black's Iron Man 3). SFX followed up with Feige and asked him if Guardians of the Galaxy will be "as integral to Avengers 2 as each Avenger's solo film?" As in, will we see those characters crossover? "I would say that it does not. It's much more of a standalone film. It takes place in the same universe. And when we've been on the other side of that universe in other movies, you might see those characteristics in Guardians, but the Avengers are not involved with what's happening out there at this time." Sounds about right. Not surprised to hear that reply.
I'm considerably excited to see the next "cosmic" phase of Marvel Studios movies, especially if they're going all out setting them in space. If only we could get a Dr. Strange movie on the slate, I'd be set until Phase 3. For now we have to be patient for updates from Feige while we wait for Iron Man 3 to kick off the summer.
